Global Seminar
10th -11th GR // Ms.Montes
INVESTIGATE THE WORLD// TAKE ACTION
As a school that emphasizes the importance of learning about the world, in our global seminar class we had the opportunity to learn about the Mexican Day of the Dead Celebration. Personally, I had always been intrigued by the vibrant and unique look of the altars and art that I had previously seen. In class, we discussed the importance of El Dia de Los Muertos and learned about the different items that are typically included in the altars. The assignment was to create an alter to commemorate a deceased loved one or a public figure/ celebrity. Because I had been fortunate enough to not have lost a personal loved one, I chose to commemorate Texan Singer Selena Quintanilla (11th GR) and the 40 Victims of the 2016 Orlando Shooting (12th).
When it came to choosing a person (s) to commemorate, I made sure that I was willing to remember them in loving way, that they meant something to me, even if I had not met them. As a person who is passionate about music and hopes to grow as a performer, I chose Selena Quintanilla. Selena and I share the same birth date and passion, I believe that Selena left this world far to early, Selena would have thrived in her career as a singer. Selena continues to inspire me and I look up to her with her special ways of lighting up a stage and singing to her heart's content. The Orlando shooting was a devastating event in our Nation, it did not only affect the families of those who had to say goodbye to their departed, but also affected the LGBTQ+ community and those who support them. This event only further proved to us that discrimination is still highly present in our world. As a person who advocates for human rights, It was Important to commemorate the victims of this catastrophe in the class, not only because they deserve to be remembered like everyone else, but to serve as a reminder that we still have work to do in ending discrimination. As I mentioned before, El Dia de Los Muertos is a celebration that had always intrigued me, because of this I am glad that my global seminar teacher introduced me to the important significance behind it, through this project I was truly capable of Investigating the World, and to take action by keeping the spirit of our deceased alive, along with spreading a message of unity . |
